How the Guide Works

Programme information is separate data from the broadcast

The programme guide does not come inside the stream; it is carried to the player from a separate data source. Therefore, when the guide is not defined the channels open without problems but the programme name and time information stays empty. A missing guide does not affect stream quality; it only reduces planning convenience.

For the guide to look correct two conditions are needed: the guide source must be defined and the channel names must match the guide entries. When matching is complete the programme information appears in the channel list and on the playback screen. For login methods you can look at the Xtream Codes setup, for playlist management the M3U setup pages.

  • Is the EPG source defined in the player?
  • Has matching between the channel list and the guide been started?
  • Are the device's time zone and clock setting correct?
  • Is automatic refresh on for the guide?
EPG setup: defining the programme guide source and matching it with the channel list Guide support
Guide Setup

Complete EPG Setup in Four Steps

Programme guide setup consists of four steps: the guide settings are opened, the source is defined, the channels are matched and the data is refreshed. Since the guide works independently of the stream, these steps do not affect the channel list.

  1. 01

Open the guide settings in the player

In the player's settings menu the section titled guide or EPG is opened. In some players this section is found under the channel list settings.

  2. 02

    Define the guide source

The guide source shared within the subscription scope is entered in the relevant field and saved. In players that support Xtream login the source can be defined together with the login details.

  3. 03

    Start channel matching

The player matches the channel names with the guide entries. For channels that do not match, the channel is selected manually from the matching list.

  4. 04

    Refresh and check

The guide data is refreshed; the programme currently on air and the following programmes appear in the channel list. The device's time zone is checked to confirm whether there is any shift.

If the guide stays empty, check the time zone first

If the guide is defined but the programme information looks empty or shifted, the device's time zone and clock setting are checked; then the guide is matched again. Detailed steps are on the EPG not working page.

Guide Checks

Points to Check for Programme Information

When the guide data is visible the setup is considered complete. However, matching quality, the time zone and refresh behaviour determine the accuracy of the programme information. The items below summarise these checks.

Items to check after EPG setup
Check item Why it matters How to check
SourceDefinition of the guide source If the source is not defined no programme information appears on any channel. The guide source is entered in the player settings and, after saving, a refresh is started.
MatchingChannel name compatibility On channels whose name does not match the guide entry the programme information stays empty. Non-matching channels are selected manually from the matching list.
ClockDevice time zone When the time zone is different the programme information looks shifted. The device's time zone and clock setting are set to the correct value and the guide is refreshed again.
UpdateRefreshing the data In a guide that is not updated the programme times may become outdated over time. Automatic refresh for the guide is left on in the player settings or refreshed manually.
ScopeLimit of the guide data Some channels may remain outside the coverage of the guide data. The coverage is checked; for missing channels programme tracking is done via the broadcast schedule.
BroadcastEffect of the guide on the stream A missing guide does not lower stream quality; it only reduces planning convenience. If there is a problem with the stream, the connection and player settings are checked rather than the guide.

When the guide checks are complete the current programme information appears in the channel list. If the guide does not arrive, the steps on the EPG not working page, if the playlist does not load, the steps on the IPTV not opening pages are followed.

Subscription Options

Subscription Durations for Watching with the Guide

Guide data is kept up to date throughout the subscription period. Content scope is the same in all duration options; the choice determines the total amount and the monthly average.

Frequently Asked Questions

EPG Setup FAQs about

What is EPG?

EPG (electronic programme guide) is the data layer that shows which programme is currently on the channel you are watching and the times of the following programmes. The guide only displays information; it does not affect the stream itself.

How is EPG set up?

The player's settings screen titled guide or EPG is opened, the guide source is defined and matching with the channel list is started. When matching is complete, programme information starts to appear in the channel list.

Why does the programme guide look empty?

The most common reasons are that the guide source is not defined, matching is not completed or the device time zone is different. After the source is defined the guide needs to be refreshed.

Does the guide come automatically with Xtream login?

In players that support Xtream login the guide information can be defined together with the login. If programme information stays empty, the source is selected in the player's guide settings and matching is refreshed.

How often is the guide updated?

Guide data is refreshed daily; automatic refresh can be left on in the player settings. If it is not left on, programme information may become outdated over time and a manual refresh is needed.

Is programme information available on all channels?

Guide coverage varies according to the guide data used. When a channel name does not match the guide entry, programme information appears empty for that channel; the channel is matched manually from the matching list.

What should I do if programme information looks wrong or shifted?

The device's time zone and clock setting are checked, then the guide is matched again. If the problem continues the player's guide data is cleared and reloaded; the details are on the EPG not working page.

For guide problems you can look at the EPG not working, for login methods the Xtream Codes setup pages.
